Split Screen: Documents and Agents
Circuitry's window has two areas. The docs area on the left holds your documents: code, whiteboards, designs, sheets, terminals, web pages. The chat area on the right holds your agents, both agent chats and CLI agents such as Claude Code. You can split each area on its own. Splitting one never rearranges the other, and the divider between the two areas stays where you put it.
Split the docs area
- Split view: the button at the right end of the document tab bar. The window divides into a left and a right pane, and each pane gets its own tab bar.
- Move a tab between panes: right-click a tab (or press and hold it on a tablet) and choose Move Tab to Right Pane or Move Tab to Left Pane.
- Bottom panel: from a tab's menu, Move Tab to Bottom Panel opens a panel under the documents. Use Move Tab to Top Panel to send a tab back up. in the bottom panel's tab bar splits the bottom panel into a left and a right half.
- Close split view / Close bottom panel: the button at the end of a pane's tab bar. Its tabs stay open and return to the remaining pane.
- Resize: drag the line between two panes.
Each pane shows one document at a time. Click in a pane to make it the active one. The agent works on the document in the active pane.
Put several agents on screen
The chat area can hold several panels side by side and stacked, each with its own agent. For example, a coding agent can run in one panel while you talk to a second agent in the next.
The + menu
The button at the right of each panel's tab bar starts a new chat in that panel. Right-click it (or press and hold on a tablet) for more:
- New Chat: another chat in this panel, as another tab.
- New Agent to the Right: opens a new panel to the right of this one, with a new chat in it.
- New Agent Below: opens a new panel under this one, with a new chat in it.
- Close Panel: removes the panel. Its chats stay open and move to the panel next to it. This item appears only when the chat area has more than one panel.
A new chat opens in the same mode as the chat you were using. Start one from a CLI agent and you get another CLI agent; start one from an agent chat and you get an agent chat. To change a chat's mode, use Switch to CLI or Switch to Agent in its header.
Move a chat between panels
Right-click a chat's tab (or press and hold it on a tablet):
- Split Right / Split Down: moves this chat into a new panel to the right of, or below, its current panel. These appear when the panel has more than one chat.
- Move to Left Panel, Move to Right Panel, Move to Panel Above, Move to Panel Below: moves this chat into the panel on that side. Only the directions that have a panel are listed.
A chat keeps running while it moves. A CLI agent's terminal stays connected and a conversation keeps its place.
Working with panels
- The panel you're working in has the brighter tab bar. New chats open there, including chats you start with ⌘T and chats you open from the Open chats list.
- Resize: drag the line between two panels.
- Zoom a panel: ⌘⏎ (Ctrl+Enter on Windows and Linux), or View → Zoom Agent Panel, makes the panel you're in fill the whole chat area. A blue line under its tabs and a Zoomed pill at the top show that it's zoomed. Press the key again or click the pill to put the split back. The other panels keep running while they're covered, so nothing restarts.
- Close a chat: when a panel's last chat closes, the panel closes too.
- Hide everything: Hide chat pane (top-right of the chat area), or the chat button in the app header, hides all panels at once. Showing the chat area again brings them back as you left them.
- More room: drag the divider between the docs area and the chat area. If you close the last document tab, the docs area closes and the agents take the whole window.
On tablets, foldables and phones
- Desktop and wide tablets: panels go side by side and can also be stacked.
- Narrow windows, tablets in portrait, and foldables opened out: panels stack top to bottom, because there isn't room for two agents side by side. The + menu offers New Agent Below only. If you split the chat area on a wider screen, the same panels show stacked here, and they return to side by side when the window is wide again.
- Phones: the chat area shows one agent at a time, and you switch agents with its tabs. The docs area has no split view on a phone either. The Docs and Agent buttons in the bottom bar switch between the two areas.
